The town is situated on the shores of Clew Bay, in one of
the most scenic areas in Europe. It is a town that is full
of character but has modern amenities to suit all ages.
Shops include two top quality butchers, a newly refurbished
supermarket, a newsagents, a garden centre, a well equipped
DIY shop and a drycleaners. There are also two hotels; the
long established Newport House Hotel and the newly opened
Hotel Newport, a coffee shop and a selection of pubs, some
serving top quality bar food. Newport has a national school,
a large play ground and a Post office.
Location
The town is located within 15kms of Castlebar and
Westport and is only one hour's drive from Knock Airport. It
has a relaxed and friendly atmosphere with a community focus
often lost in larger towns.

Newport is blessed with an abundance of leisure options -
horse riding, hill climbing, walking and cycling, world
class deep sea fishing as well as lake and river
fishing.There are breathtaking views in the spectacular area
of Loughs Furnace and Feagh and nearby Letterkeen Forest. A
short drive away are beautiful Blue Flag beaches and many
sought after golf courses including Westport's Championship
18 hole golf course, Mulrany's 9 hole links course which
overlooks Clew Bay, Castlebar's 18 hole course and the
famous 18 hole course at Carne in Belmullet. There are a
selection of pubs and restaurants in Newport and a wide
choice of restaurants, leisure centres and cinemas in both
nearby Westport and Castlebar.
Historic
The surrounding area is rich in history and archaeology -
Burrishoole Abbey, the splendid remains of a Dominican
Abbey, is just outside the town as is Carrigahowley Castle,
the home of the famous 16th century sea queen, Grainne
Uaile.
Built from local red sandstone, Saint Patrick's Church
stands above the town, overlooking the the picturesque town
of Newport and the century old railway viaduct, and its
seven cut stone arches spanning the Black Oak River that
carries salmon from Clew Bay to the famous Beltra Lake.
